The Secret of Thought – A Letter from Mavis Karn

Dear Kids (and former kids),

I have a secret to tell you.

Nobody meant to keep it from you—it’s just that it’s been one of those truths so obvious, people stopped noticing it. Like looking everywhere for a key that’s been in your hand the whole time.

The secret is this: you are already whole.
You are whole just as you are. You don’t need fixing, changing, or improvement to be worthy.

You already have everything you need within you to live a rich, joyful, meaningful life.

You have wisdom, common sense, creativity, self-esteem, humor, resilience, and love. You are pure potential. You are missing nothing.

So what gets in the way of feeling that? Just one thing:
A thought.
One thought—your thought. Not someone else’s, not society’s, not your past. Just the thought you’re having right now that feels more important than feeling grateful, alive, joyful, content, loving, or peaceful.

That thought is the only thing between you and happiness.

And guess what?
You are the thinker.
You are the one who gets to choose where your attention goes.
You are the writer, producer, director, and star of the moment you’re living right now.

Not your past. Not your parents. Not your circumstances. Not your friends, teachers, or even the news. Just you.

Understanding Thought and Emotional Well-Being

Thinking is an incredible human power. But like any tool, it can help us or hurt us—depending on how we use it. And the way we know whether we’re using it for or against ourselves?
By how it feels.

When we use our thoughts against ourselves or others, we feel off.
When we don’t, we feel aligned, calm, and connected.

Our feelings exist to guide us—like an internal compass—back toward our natural state of clarity and well-being.

So remember this:
Your thoughts are not always telling the truth.
When you’re in a low mood, when you’re feeling down or discouraged, those thoughts aren’t trustworthy. Your mental clarity is clouded. But when those thoughts pass and your mood lifts, your mind clears again—your thinking becomes positive, insightful, and inspired.

You Hold the Power to Shift

The only way you can feel badly about yourself or your life is if you think badly about them. That’s the whole secret.
And the power to change that?
It’s in you. Every minute.

This is the most liberating truth I’ve ever learned, and I want you to know it too.

With love,
Mavis
